The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has introduced a new resit program for students, allowing them to retake their West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) papers as early as January and February 2025.
This new program, called WASSCE PC1, aims to give candidates a second chance to improve their grades without waiting for the next exam season. The Head of Public Affairs, Mr. John Kapi, made this announcement in a statement released recently.

About WAEC Resit Program 2025
The resit program is designed to address the concerns of students who wish to quickly enhance their performance and avoid delays in their academic progress. According to Mr. Kapi, this initiative will help prevent students from losing a full academic year due to failed papers.
“This program offers students an opportunity to retake their exams early. They can register for the resit papers online through our official website or WAEC accredited internet cafés until 8th January 2025,” Kapi explained.
The examinations will take place between 24th January and 15th February 2025 in designated regional centers.
WAEC Resit Registration 2025 Fee
WAEC has made it clear that the registration fee for the resit papers will be affordable to encourage widespread participation. While the exact cost has not been disclosed, students are urged to complete their registration promptly to avoid missing out.
The fee structure will cover the examination costs and ensure that students receive all necessary support, including study materials and feedback from chief examiners.
Faster Access to Feedback and Results
To help candidates prepare effectively, WAEC plans to release chief examiners’ reports earlier than usual. These reports will highlight common mistakes students make and provide guidance on how to improve their answers.
“This is part of our commitment to ensuring that students are well-prepared. We’ve also made information about this program widely available through banners, our website, and the WAEC results checker platform,” Kapi added.
Eligibility for the WAEC Resit Program 2025
Mr. Kapi noted that all students who received their results recently and need to retake one or two papers are eligible to register. Additionally, students whose results were canceled can also participate, provided they haven’t been banned for examination malpractice.
However, the program will initially be conducted only in regional capitals due to the limited number of candidates.
Stakeholders React to the New WAEC Resit Program
Felix Oluwaseun Agbesanwa, Chairman of the Ogun State chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUS), praised the initiative, describing it as a “step in the right direction.”
He emphasized that the resit exams would allow students to focus on specific papers they failed, giving them a better chance of passing. “This policy will help students avoid a year-long delay in their education,” he stated.
Agbesanwa, however, suggested that the registration deadline should be extended to the end of January to allow more students to take advantage of the opportunity.
How the WAEC Resit Benefits Students
This resit initiative comes with several advantages:
- Students can quickly correct their grades and qualify for higher education admissions without waiting for the next exam session.
- By targeting only the failed papers, students can dedicate their time and effort to those subjects, increasing their chances of success.
- The registration fee for the resit exams is expected to be lower than the cost of registering for all papers in the next WASSCE.
Agbesanwa further noted that passing the resit papers would likely combine with the previous results to form a single sitting result, enhancing students chances of admission into higher institutions.
Caution Against Misuse of the Opportunity
While the resit program is a welcome development, stakeholders have expressed concerns about students becoming complacent.
Agbesanwa warned, “This initiative should not encourage laziness. Students must use this opportunity wisely by studying hard to avoid resitting any exam in the future.”
He also highlighted the importance of WAEC maintaining transparency and ensuring the program achieves its objectives.
