A BLESSING IN THE STORM
The rain had been falling non-stop for two days. Our village, tucked along the riverbank, was slowly turning into a flood zone. I watched helplessly as water crept into our compound, swallowing everything we owned.
My name is Esther, a fifteen-year-old girl from Odugba village. That week, my mother had gone to visit her sick sister in another town, leaving me with my younger brother, Joel, and our grandmother.
At first, we thought the rain would pass, just like every other storm. But by nightfall on the second day, we realized it was no ordinary flood. Water had entered our small hut. I quickly packed some clothes into a bag, lifted Joel onto my back, and helped Grandma to her feet.
The journey to the community shelter was supposed to be short. But the only road we knew was already flooded. We walked through muddy paths, our feet sinking with every step. Suddenly, Grandma stumbled and cried out in pain — she had twisted her ankle.
I began to panic. Joel was crying. Grandma couldn’t walk. And we were all soaked, cold, and lost in the rain. There was no mobile network to call for help.
Just when I felt all hope was gone, I saw a flicker of light in the distance. I screamed with all my strength, hoping someone would hear. Minutes later, two men carrying torches appeared. They were part of a rescue team from the Red Cross. They had been searching for stranded families.
They carried Grandma, gave us blankets, and took us to a dry, warm place where other villagers had gathered. We were given food and dry clothes. That night, lying next to my family in safety, I looked up and whispered, “Thank You, Lord.”
It was indeed a help from above.
