1. A misunderstanding has developed between you and a close friend. Write a letter to a mutual friend explaining the cause of the misunderstanding and requesting him or her to intervene.

ANSWER

(1)

No 12 Unity Street,
Thinkers Corner,
Enugu State.
6th December, 2025.

Dear Amaka,

I sincerely hope this letter finds you in good health, peace of mind, and in God’s abundant blessings. It has been quite some time since I last wrote to you, and I truly miss our cheerful conversations and the warmth of your wise counsel. I am writing to you today with a very heavy heart to explain in full detail the unfortunate misunderstanding that has developed between my close friend Chiamaka and me, and to humbly request your kind intervention in settling the matter.

Our friendship with Chiamaka has lasted for several years, and throughout this period, we have shared joy, sorrow, secrets, and countless memorable moments. This is why the sudden coldness between us has affected me deeply. The root of the misunderstanding occurred last Saturday during a discussion on our class WhatsApp group concerning the preparations for our forthcoming end-of-year party. Some of the students were making suggestions about the venue, food, music, and other arrangements. During the discussion, Chiamaka suggested a particular hall as the venue for the celebration.

When it was my turn to contribute, I merely suggested that we should also consider other venues that might be more convenient for students who live far away, especially those who depend on public transport to get home late at night. Unfortunately, my comment was wrongly interpreted by Chiamaka as an indirect attack on her suggestion. Before I could even explain myself properly on the platform, she reacted angrily and accused me of always trying to oppose her ideas. Some students misunderstood the situation and added fuel to the fire with unnecessary comments and jokes.

Since that unpleasant incident, our beautiful friendship has suffered greatly. Chiamaka has stopped talking to me completely. She avoids sitting near me in class, ignores my greetings, and even blocks my calls and messages. I have tried severally to approach her personally to explain my true intention, but all my attempts have failed because she simply walks away whenever she sees me. This situation has left me emotionally disturbed and deeply unhappy. I find it difficult to concentrate in class, and I am constantly worried about losing such a dear friend over a simple misunderstanding.

Dear Amaka, you are one of the few people who know both Chiamaka and me very well. You understand our characters, our strengths, and even our weaknesses. You also know that I am not the type of person who deliberately hurts other people’s feelings or seeks to discredit a friend in public. I, therefore, humbly appeal to you as our mutual and trusted friend to please speak with Chiamaka on my behalf. Kindly help her to understand that I never intended to insult her, disregard her opinion, or embarrass her in any way.

Please let her know that I value her friendship more than my pride. I am willing to apologize wholeheartedly if my words caused her pain, even though my intention was not evil. All I desire is for peace to return between us so that we can continue the beautiful friendship we once shared.

I strongly believe that with your wisdom, patience, and calm approach, this misunderstanding can be resolved amicably. I will be forever grateful to you if you succeed in helping us reconcile. Thank you so much for taking out your precious time to read this long letter and for your anticipated assistance.

Kindly convey my warm regards to your family. I look forward to hearing from you soon with good news.

Yours sincerely,
Vikky

2. Write a story to illustrate the saying: Necessity is the mother of invention.

ANSWER

(2)
Necessity Is the Mother of Invention

In the small riverside village of Umudike, life was simple but tough. The villagers depended mainly on fishing for survival. Every morning, men paddled their wooden canoes into the river, while women waited on the banks to smoke and sell the fish. Among these fishermen was a poor but intelligent young boy named Chinedu, who had lost his father at a tender age. He lived with his widowed mother and two younger sisters.

One rainy season, disaster struck the village. The river overflowed its banks after days of heavy rainfall. Canoes were swept away, fishing nets were destroyed, and many homes close to the river collapsed. Chinedu’s family lost everything they had. With no canoe and no net, survival became very difficult. Hunger stared them in the face.

Day after day, Chinedu watched his younger sisters cry from hunger, and his mother grow weaker. He tried borrowing fishing tools from neighbors, but everyone was struggling too. One evening, as he walked sadly along the riverbank, he noticed how plastic waste floated freely on the water and often trapped small fish. Suddenly, an idea came to his mind.

That night, Chinedu gathered empty plastic kegs, old ropes, wires, and broken nets from the refuse dump. He worked tirelessly for days, joining the materials together. Though people laughed at him and called his effort useless, he did not give up. Finally, he created a floating fishing trap that could stay on the river and automatically collect fish as water passed through it.

Early one morning, he placed the invention in the river. By evening, he returned and was shocked to see that the trap was filled with fish. For the first time in weeks, his family ate well. The next day, he sold some fish at the market and earned enough money to buy food and other necessities.

Within two weeks, the news of Chinedu’s invention spread through the village. Other fishermen came to learn from him. Soon, many families began using the same fishing trap. Hunger was reduced, and the village slowly returned to life. Chinedu was later invited by a local organization that supported young innovators, and he was given a scholarship to further his education.

Looking back, Chinedu realized that if poverty and hunger had not pushed him to think deeply, he might never have discovered his hidden talent. What seemed like misfortune became a blessing in disguise.

Comprehension
(20 marks)

You are advised to spend about 30 minutes on this section.

6. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions on it.

Nature has the most enchanting melodies in the world. Even when we fail to observe it, nature exists around us in all forms of life, in gardens and in forests. One can sit for hours enjoying the chirping of birds or the gurgling of a stream. Listening to these sounds can make people forget the worries of the day. But how many people are aware of these sounds of nature?

Do people really understand the value of what is around them? Do they observe the sunrise and the sunset; the moon and the stars, the soft breeze, the rustling of the green trees, and the chirping of birds? People often take nature for granted. Seeing nature is different from observing it; hearing it is not the same as listening to it; and walking within it is not like feeling it.

In big cities, one can observe nature in trees and flowers. Experiencing nature is one of the best therapies for frayed nerves. When people are troubled or stressed, a walk in a garden or park can calm them down as they hear the birds and feel the breeze against their face. Even at night, one can hear the sound of crickets and observe the swaying trees.

Sadly, today, people are more interested in transforming their environment and they fail to see the beauty of nature. Technological advancement and urbanization have dealt a severe blow to nature. In the name of modernization and creativity, vast expanses of forests are giving way to skyscrapers and trees are cut down for timber. People are so preoccupied with technology that they do not have time to appreciate nature. The younger generation spend most of their time watching television or surfing the Internet.

Trees protect our cities from the effects of harsh weather and help reduce pollution. When trees are removed, we create an environment that is detrimental to our health and happiness. If nature is not nurtured, the soil, the waters and the trees will soon cease to exist. Who would want to live in a barren or desolate place? Who would want to live in a world devoid of colour?

Modernization can be beneficial, but nature has its advantages.

SECTION C

SUMMARY
[30 marks]

You are advised to spend about 40 minutes on this section.

7. Read the following passage carefully and answer the question on it.

A close look at the marriage institution today will suggest that it seems to be under some form of ideological attack, the consequence of which is that people are no longer treating it with the high regard that it, perhaps, deserves. While some are refraining from it altogether, others are quitting it as speedily as they get into it with little or no regret. Yet, there is no doubt that marital union is the conventional route to ensuring the reproduction of the human race. But why is contemporary society avoiding marriage like the plague?

For many women these days, financial independence means a complete absence of haste in adopting the last name of another family. In the distant past, a woman of marriageable age used to be under pressure to get married before she passed her prime. It was expected that some responsible man would come for her hand quickly enough. Today, there are many unmarried working females who are solely responsible for maintaining their parents and siblings. So, why would any right-thinking person want to pressurise such women into marriage?

In the last couple of years, the press has been awash with news of domestic violence leading to either the maiming of a spouse or outright fatality in some cases. It is hard for such news not to discourage some people from committing to marriage, especially if they themselves witnessed such violence in their own family or with other people around them. Furthermore, being afraid of ending up with the wrong person, people now move from one relationship to another as they search for the most compatible partner. When that quest turns out to be fruitless, they may resort to having a child out of wedlock and carrying on with their lives with or without eventual marriage.

For some, the cost of weddings is prohibitive, especially those who want the so-called society wedding; so, they keep trying to prepare themselves for the venture, saving from month to month, year to year. But things may go wrong along the line and they have to restart the dating journey with another potential spouse, even as rising costs compel them to rethink their expectations. How about people with no jobs but who are old enough and willing to marry? Needless to say, such people will put their daily survival ahead of marrying, which, by the way, will require constant money inflow.

For some other people, the issue is not that they themselves lack a means of livelihood, it is just that they want a spouse who has not only an income but also a steady and substantial one. This way, they are spared the uncertainty of financial distress in the future when domestic responsibilities begin to pile up. It enables them to live the life they desire and achieve their dreams.

Finally, the stigma attached to singleness is fast fading away. In the past, it was considered a taboo for a young girl to go past her teenage years and still remain single, and an able-bodied, middle-aged man who was still single was looked upon with suspicion. But now, spinsterhood and prolonged bachelorhood are so commonplace and accepted as normal, hence the lack of haste when it comes to saying, “I do.”

QUESTIONS

In six sentences, one for each, summarise the reasons why people do not seem to be in a hurry to get married nowadays.

ANSWER

SUMMARY

(7)
-Changing attitudes and criticism of the marriage institution have reduced its appeal and urgency.
-Financial independence especially among women removes the pressure to marry for security.
-Frequent reports of domestic violence make people wary of committing to marriage.
-Fear of ending up with the wrong partner leads many to delay marriage or move between relationships.
-The high cost of weddings and economic hardship force people to postpone marriage or prioritize survival.
-The stigma of being single has faded, so prolonged bachelorhood or spinsterhood is now socially acceptable.

2024 WAEC English Language Past Questions And Answers

SECTION A: ESSAY WRITING

Answer only one question in this section. Your answer should not be less than 450 words.

Question 1: Article for School Magazine

THE NEED TO REVIVE CLUBS AND SOCIETIES IN SCHOOLS

(See full answer in the downloadable PDF below)

Question 2: Letter to the Chairperson (Formal Letter)

1 Fatuga Street,
Olokemeji,
Abeokuta, Ogun State.
May 28, 2025.
The Chairperson,
Municipal Council,
Oke Mosan, Abeokuta,
Ogun State.

Dear Sir,

URGENT NEED FOR A BAN ON PLASTIC BAGS IN OUR COMMUNITY

I am writing to you today as a concerned resident of this community to express my strong support for the municipal council’s intention to ban the use of plastic bags. This initiative is not only timely but also crucial for the long-term well-being of our environment, public health, and economic sustainability.

I wish to highlight three compelling reasons why the implementation of this ban is not just necessary, but imperative. Firstly, the severe environmental degradation caused by plastic bags is undeniable. Our community, like many others, grapples with the pervasive sight of plastic bags littering our streets, clogging drainage systems, and polluting our natural landscapes. These bags persist in the environment for hundreds of years, breaking down into microplastics that contaminate our soil and water bodies.

Secondly, the continued use of plastic bags presents a substantial public health risk. When plastic waste accumulates, it creates breeding grounds for vectors of disease such as mosquitoes and rodents. Furthermore, the chemicals used in the production of plastic bags can leach into food items, creating long-term health concerns.

Finally, the economic burden associated with plastic bags is unsustainable. Our municipality incurs significant costs related to the disposal of plastic waste. Encouraging the use of reusable bags would foster a more sustainable consumption pattern.

I strongly urge the municipal council to proceed with the ban on plastic bags without delay.

Yours faithfully,
